One of the oldest caves: the Velvet Cave

The Velvet Cave is one of the oldest caves in South Limburg. Rumour has it that it dates back to the 11th or 12th century. During your visit to the Velvet Cave, you will come face to face with magical murals, inscriptions and a loving chapel from the 18th century. There is also an abundance of soft marl wall sculptures on display. It is not possible to visit this cave alone, this is always done with a guide. This is because the Velvet Cave is so large that you can quickly get lost in it. In addition, there are many kinds of exits and a large underground corridor system. The secret escape passages were only discovered in 1937, probably by the knights who were able to escape the castle unseen by this means. All in all, the Velvet Cave is packed with historical history and is definitely worth a visit. Also, this cave in Valkenburg can easily be combined with the old-fashioned castle ruins.

Furthermore, the Municipal Cave can be easily visited by foot, as well as by train. This special mode of transport is definitely worthwhile. Prefer a special experience in this Valkenburg cave?
